Introduction:
CRSD is a Microsoft Access database, available on the World Wide Web. It
contains some 2500 records of books and other reference material mostly in the
Chemistry Library. It is useful for finding reference material by subject when a
search in IUCAT is unsuccessful. Keywords have been added to the records for
better retrieval. Each record contains full information about the printed work,
database, software or other item, and call number if available in the Chemistry
Library.
This web interface is
designed to allow for easy queries on chemistry reference materials.

What is this resource?
The library reference materials are a tremendously underutilized
resource. Often, a frustrated researcher or student will be unaware
that the library has a book or document that may well easily fulfill
an informational need. Unfortunately, there has been no easy way to
locate such items beyond a broad search in the IUCAT database.
Consequently, in the early 1990's, Dr. Wiggins developed the CRSD
database using ProCite software. This includes information about
works stored in the chemistry library, linked to indexing keywords.
While this was a tremendous resource for the library and for patrons,
the difficulty both in access and in interface/use resulted in this
rarely being used by those with information needs.
The goal of this project was to
develop a way to access this information easily. The web interface
solution seemed to be the best; it offered a familiar GUI interface
with which most users would be familiar. Further, it afforded not only
platform independence, but computer independence; this would yield a
resource that could be accessed from anywhere in the department, the
school, the world.
This resource was created and maintained as an experimental resource during the spring and summer of 1997 by Keith Schreiber.
It has been integrated into the resources offered from the CHEMINFO page. |
